In today’s fast paced modern world, it is imperative we look at things for more than surface value. On the surface, Hip Hop can be negatively labeled as misogynistic and violent - but at a closer and more attentive glance, hip-hop can be one of the most unifying and empowering cultures there is. It’s power to influence and positively affect an individual's life is as powerful as any other artform. Hip Hop’s ability to grab the attention of youth worldwide is unmatched. One of the biggest problems that educators have is gaining the respect and attention of their young students. Hip Hop does this with no effort - so from there, we have to look at how we can utilize the powerful influence it has on youth in the most positive and productive way possible. Through Hip Hop Education, we can cultivate a new generation of positive leaders who have learned the invaluable lessons of creative expression, fearlessness, and ingenuity. Hands-on teaching and role-modeling can effectively turn a mere infatuation with Hip Hop Culture, into an active relationship of learning through art. Without Hip Hop Education, we have fans and aspiring artists just looking at Hip Hop for surface value - and with this comes the dangers of misrepresentation and the chance of our youth straying down the wrong path. With Hip Hop Education, we effectively take the culture into our hands and teach it in it’s true positive form. This ensures a positive societal change, all through the powerful tool of Hip Hop Culture and Education. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. – Margaret Mead, Anthropologist”
There is no such thing as a bad student - only bad teachers. A teacher takes full responsibility in taking on each unique student that is put in front of them. Within educational organizations, there needs to be accountability with each of its teachers as to why the kids are learning - and why they may not be learning. The question that needs to be constantly asked is - what is it that opens a students ear? What makes them receptive to the lesson the teacher is teaching? A harmonious combination of both nature and nurture is what puts a student with an open ear on a path of learning and growth. If you put somebody in a receptive, safe, and inspiring environment - they will most surely soak in everything that environment has to offer. It is then up to the teacher to fortify the environments natural teachings with his own. The pairing of an inspiring environment with a passionate teacher is the simple, proven, and effective recipe to teaching. We aim to put to rest the notion of “nature vs. nurture” - it should not be looked at as a battle, but rather, a relationship. A natural approach to nurturing a student through a respective curriculum is key in basing the student’s education. The less we pit nature and nurture against each other, the closer we place our student bodies to a point that positions them to actualize their real potential. “One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.” - Carl Jung
